Orthomerica’s 20+ year history and a recent Starband product analysis show that less than 1% of all infants with deformational head shapes received a second orthosis to complete treatment!
Circumferential growth of 2–3 cm are needed to correct a moderate to severe cranial deformity. The age of the infant at the initiation of treatment directly relates to natural head growth patterns and duration of treatment.
Most infants with moderate to severe deformational skull anomalies complete the orthotic treatment program with a single orthosis as growth and volume are appropriately accounted for in the modification and design features of the Starband.
A second CRO is rarely indicated but may be considered if there has been a disruption in the treatment program (e.g., infant illness), very severe deformities requiring more than 3cm of circumferential and directed growth to correct the head shape, or comorbidities that require accommodations in the orthotic design or wearing schedule.
* Ideal time to capture the necessary 2–3 cm of natural head growth to correct a moderate or severe infant skull deformity with a 3-month treatment program.
** A 6-month treatment program is needed to capture 2–3 cm of natural head growth to correct a moderate or severe infant skull deformity in an older infant.
